European migration in Spanish America show different characteristics with regard of the own economies in each country. In this article we analyze, in comparison, two cities and ports: Valparaiso y Buenos Aires. In the case of Buenos Aires migration was a massive process in relation to labor market. On the contrary, in Valparaiso with a restricted labor market, immigration was very limited. This quantitative difference also assesses qualitative differences, because in Buenos Aires we find an important group of labor workers but in Valparaiso the majority of immigrants were merchants.
